Email marketing agencies on Clutch charge an average of $100 to $149 an hour, and most email projects reviewed there cost $10,000 to $49,999 (Clutch). A managed monthly program usually runs a few thousand dollars a month. Ours runs $2,500 to $7,500 a month, month to month. Then you pay for the email platform on top, which can cost anywhere from $13 to $3,600 a month.
So the answer depends on who does the work and which tools you send from. This guide breaks down each cost, with the source for every number, checked in September 2026.
Email marketing costs at a glance
| Option | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance email marketer | $15 to $40 an hour, median $25 | Upwork |
| Email marketing agency, hourly | $100 to $149 an hour on average | Clutch |
| Email marketing agency, project | $10,000 to $49,999 is the most common project size | Clutch |
| Managed monthly retainer | $2,500 to $7,500 a month at SeeResponse | Our email marketing service |
| In-house hire | $78,760 median yearly pay for market research analysts and marketing specialists, before benefits and tools | US Bureau of Labor Statistics |
| Email platform | $13 a month (Mailchimp Essentials) to $3,600 a month (HubSpot Marketing Hub Enterprise) | Vendor pricing pages, linked below |
Freelancer and agency rates are a range, and the work behind them differs. A freelancer at $25 an hour usually builds what you specify. An agency at $125 an hour usually brings the strategy, copy, design, setup and reporting as well.
How much does email marketing cost?
Email marketing has four costs.
- The people. Someone has to plan the program, write and design the emails, build the automations, and read the results. That is a freelancer, an agency, an employee or a mix.
- The platform. HubSpot, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign or similar, priced mostly by contact count and features.
- The data. Lists have to be built, cleaned and kept current. Bounces and old contacts hurt delivery, so list hygiene is a recurring cost.
- The sending setup. Authentication records, warmed domains and, for cold email, separate mailboxes and a sending tool.
The fourth is the easiest to forget. And it decides whether the rest is worth paying for. Validity’s State of Email 2024 found that 7% of email lands in spam. Since February 1, 2024, Google has also required anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC and keep spam complaints below 0.30%.
Email marketing agency pricing models
Agencies price email marketing in four ways. Many mix two of them.
Hourly
You pay for the hours used. It suits small, defined jobs, such as a template build or a deliverability check. The Clutch average for email agencies is $100 to $149 an hour. Rates on the agencies we compared ran from under $25 an hour (Belkins) to $150 to $199 an hour (SmartBug Media).
Per project
A fixed fee for a defined result: a platform migration, a set of automations, a welcome series. Most email projects on Clutch fall between $10,000 and $49,999. Hustler Marketing, for example, lists a $5,000 minimum project.
Monthly retainer
A monthly fee for an ongoing program: strategy, campaigns, automations, testing and reporting. This is how most B2B programs run, because email pays off over months of steady sending. Our retainers run $2,500 to $7,500 a month and can be stopped at any time.
Performance-based
Some agencies charge per lead or per booked meeting, mostly for cold email and appointment setting. The fee is tied to an outcome you can see. But read the definition of a lead closely. A list of names that never replied is cheap to deliver and worth little to your sales team.
What you get at each budget
| Budget | What it usually buys | Agencies at this level |
|---|---|---|
| Under $2,500 | Template design, one-off builds and audits, per project or by the hour | Action Rocket ($25 to $49 an hour); Email Uplers project pricing |
| $2,500 to $7,500 a month | A managed program: strategy, campaigns, automation and deliverability | SeeResponse |
| $5,000 or more per project | Larger ecommerce lifecycle programs | Hustler Marketing ($5,000 minimum) |
Minimums and hourly rates are from each agency’s Clutch profile, checked in September 2026. For a longer comparison, see our list of the 9 best email marketing agencies.
Where a program lands inside a range comes down to scope. At SeeResponse, three things set the price:
- How many programs run at once. A newsletter alone costs less than a newsletter plus nurture sequences plus cold email.
- Who writes and designs the emails. Some clients supply copy and we build and send. Others hand over the whole thing.
- How much setup the platform needs. Domain warming, integrations with the CRM, and new workflows take more time in the first months.
Email platform costs in 2026
The platform is billed by the vendor, separate from any agency fee. These are the published starting prices, checked on each vendor’s site in September 2026.
| Platform | Starting price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp Essentials | $13 a month | For 500 contacts; rises with list size |
| Mailchimp Standard | $20 a month | For 500 contacts, with automation |
| Mailchimp Premium | $350 a month | For 10,000 contacts |
| ActiveCampaign | $15 a month | Billed annually; rises with contacts and features |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter | $20 a seat a month | On monthly billing; 1,000 marketing contacts |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional | From $800 a month | 2,000 marketing contacts, plus a required one-time $3,000 onboarding fee |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub Enterprise | $3,600 a month | 10,000 marketing contacts, plus a required one-time $7,000 onboarding fee |
For B2B teams, the platform choice usually follows the CRM. If sales already lives in HubSpot, email in HubSpot keeps every open, click and reply on the contact record. If you’re not on a CRM yet, ActiveCampaign or Mailchimp cost far less to start. We cover the trade-offs on our HubSpot consulting page.
Cold email tools cost extra
Cold email should never go out from your main domain or your marketing platform. It needs its own domains, mailboxes and a sending tool.
| Item | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Instantly Growth | $47 a month (5,000 emails) | Instantly |
| Instantly Hypergrowth | $97 a month (125,000 emails) | Instantly |
| Instantly Light Speed | $358 a month (500,000 emails) | Instantly |
| Google Workspace Business Starter | $7 a user a month, for each sending mailbox | Google Workspace |
Instantly’s prices are for monthly billing, and annual plans cost less. Each sending mailbox is a Workspace user, so five mailboxes add $35 a month.
Two example budgets
These examples add up the published prices above. The hours are our assumptions, marked as such.
A small B2B team doing it with a freelancer. ActiveCampaign from $15 a month, plus a freelancer for 20 hours a month at Upwork’s $25 median (20 hours is an assumption). That comes to about $515 a month. It works when your team sets the strategy and the freelancer builds and sends.
A mid-size B2B company with a managed program. HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional from $800 a month, plus a $5,000 monthly retainer. That comes to about $5,800 a month, and about $72,600 in the first year once the $3,000 HubSpot onboarding fee is added. The agency plans, writes, builds, sends and reports.
Agency vs freelancer vs in-house
| Freelancer | Agency | In-house hire | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | $15 to $40 an hour | $100 to $149 an hour, or a monthly retainer | $78,760 median yearly pay, plus benefits and tools |
| Best for | Defined tasks you can brief well | A full program: strategy, copy, design, automation, deliverability | Companies where email is a large, permanent channel |
| Main risk | Gaps outside the freelancer’s skills | Paying for more than you use | One person covering strategy, copy, design and tech |
An agency costs more per hour than a freelancer. But it brings several skills for one fee. A single hire has to cover strategy, writing, design, automation and deliverability alone. Many B2B companies start with an agency and hire in-house once email becomes a major channel.
Is email marketing worth the cost?
For most B2B companies, yes. In Litmus’s research on email ROI, 35% of companies see $10 to $36 back for every $1 spent on email, and another 30% see $36 to $50.
But that return depends on two things. The email has to reach the inbox, and someone has to measure it. The same Litmus research found that 21% of marketing leaders don’t measure email ROI at all. And open rates no longer prove much: Validity found that 70% of all opens now come from Apple’s privacy proxy, which opens email automatically. So ask for reports on clicks, replies, meetings and revenue.
How to compare email marketing quotes
Two quotes are only comparable once you know what each one covers. Ask every agency:
- How many campaigns and automations does the fee cover each month?
- Who writes the copy, and who designs the emails?
- Is deliverability included: SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup, domain warming and list cleaning?
- Is the platform included, or billed separately?
- What do you report on, and how often?
- What is the minimum term and the notice period?
An agency that can’t answer the third question clearly will cost you more later, when your email starts landing in spam.
Frequently asked questions
How much do email marketing agencies charge per month?
Managed B2B programs usually run a few thousand dollars a month. Our retainers run $2,500 to $7,500 a month. On Clutch, email agencies average $100 to $149 an hour, and most projects cost $10,000 to $49,999.
How much does email marketing cost for a small business?
A small business can start for well under $1,000 a month. Mailchimp Essentials starts at $13 a month and ActiveCampaign at $15, and a freelancer on Upwork charges a median $25 an hour. The cost rises with list size, the number of campaigns and how much of the work you hand over.
Is the email platform included in agency pricing?
Usually not. HubSpot, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign and cold email tools bill you directly. Agencies manage the platform, but the subscription stays in your name, which also means you keep your data if you change agency.
Do email marketing agencies require long contracts?
Some do, often 6 or 12 months. Ours run month to month from the start. A long minimum term shifts the risk onto you, so read the notice period before you sign.
What is the cheapest way to do email marketing?
Doing it yourself on a low-cost platform. But the cheapest option can cost more if email lands in spam or nobody measures the results. For B2B companies with long sales cycles, a program that books meetings is usually worth more than a low monthly fee.
