What is Social Media?

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Google+ are examples of social media networks that one can join for personal or business use. Social Media is a core component of Inbound, providing marketers with additional channels to spread reach, increase growth, and reach business goals.


Examples of social media platforms include:

  1. Facebook is a leading social networking platform that allows users to create profiles, connect with friends and family, share updates, photos, and videos, join groups, and follow pages of interest.
  2. Instagram is a visual-centric platform where users can share photos and videos, apply filters and editing tools, and engage with content through likes, comments, and direct messages.
  3. Twitter is a microblogging platform on which users can post short messages, known as tweets, of up to 280 characters, follow others, participate in trending topics through hashtags, and engage in real-time conversations.
  4. LinkedIn is a professional networking platform tailored for professionals to connect, build their professional brand, share industry insights, and discover job opportunities.
  5. YouTube is a video-sharing platform where users can upload, view, and share videos on various topics, including entertainment, education, tutorials, vlogs, music, and more.
  6. Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that enables users to send ephemeral photos, videos, and messages to friends or post them to their Stories, which disappear after being viewed.
  7. TikTok is a short-form video platform where users can create and share entertaining and creative videos set to music, engage in challenges, and discover trending content.
