What is Keyword Density?

The number of times a keyword is used on a web page out of the total number of words on the page. It is a metric used in search engine optimization (SEO) to gauge the relevance of a webpage to a particular keyword or topic.

Example

Suppose you have a blog post about “healthy smoothie recipes,” and the post contains 500 words. Within this blog post, the keyword phrase “healthy smoothie recipes” appears 10 times.

To calculate the keyword density:

  1. Count the total number of times the keyword phrase appears in the content: 10.
  2. Calculate the keyword density using the formula:

Keyword Density = (Number of times keyword appears / Total words in content) * 100%

Keyword Density = (10 / 500) * 100% = 2%

In this example, the keyword density for the phrase “healthy smoothie recipes” is 2%. This means that the keyword phrase appears 2 times per 100 words in the content.

It’s important to maintain a natural keyword density that feels organic and relevant to the content. Overly high keyword density can be seen as spammy by search engines and may result in penalties.
